Perfumers work in one of the only industries where the actual product is fundamentally unshowable. You can photograph a bottle, but you can't photograph a smell. You can describe it — citrus, smoke, something warm and unplaceable — but description is always a translation after the fact, never the thing itself. Every other sense has a shortcut for communication. Scent has none. It has to be experienced directly or not at all.
This creates an unusual kind of marketing problem: how do you build desire for something you cannot demonstrate in advance? The entire industry has had to get comfortable selling the idea of an experience rather than the experience itself, trusting that the gap between the pitch and the actual encounter will be closed later, in person, by the product finally getting to speak for itself.
Most people assume the hardest part of selling something is proving its quality. Perfumery suggests the harder part is sometimes just getting someone close enough to find out. The sales job isn't convincing someone the product is good. It's convincing them the moment of finding out for themselves is worth setting aside guard for, even briefly, with zero ability to preview the payoff first.
This applies further than perfume counters. Plenty of valuable things resist being demonstrated cleanly in advance — the way a relationship actually feels day to day, the way a role actually fits once you're in it, the way a piece of music actually lands once you're inside it instead of reading about it. Selling those things honestly means selling the invitation, not a preview that was never going to be accurate anyway.
If you're trying to get someone to trust something that can't be previewed, stop trying to compress it into a description that will inevitably undersell it. Get them close enough to encounter it directly. That was always going to do more work than any description could.
